"Prozac
Backlash:
Overcoming
the Dangers of Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil and Other
Antidepressants with Safe, Effective Alternatives"
by
Joseph Glenmullen, M.D.
SSRI
drugs have been prescribed for over 10 years for
everything from depression to anxiety, ADD, and drug
addiction. Family doctors write about 70 percent of
prescriptions for the SSRI antidepressants.
One in
every ten or 28 million Americans have taken a SSRI such
as Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, or other SSRI. However, most
patients are unaware of the dangers of the SSRI drugs,
or that there are safer alternatives. Dr. Joseph
Glenmullen documents many of the long-term side effects
associated with the SSRIs and other serotonin boosting
drugs. Some of the side effects include facial and body
tics that can be permanent as well as brain damage,
sexual dysfunction in 60% of the users, severe
withdrawal symptoms including hallucinations, electric
shock-like sensations, dizziness, nausea, and anxiety.
With long-term use, the effectiveness of the SSRIs
decreases. Dr. Glenmullen sheds light on the direct
link between these drugs and suicide and violence.
Prozac
Backlash
contains stories about Dr. Glenmullen's patients and
case studies that tell the patients stories. Dr.
Glenmullen documents his research with scientific
literature in the safe treatment of depression and gives
the reader enlightened information about the various
medications.
Dr.
Joseph Glenmullen, a psychiatrist who has a private
practice and Harvard University sees this trend of
antidepressant medications as dangerous. In Prozac
Backlash Dr. Glenmullen discusses what depression is
and isn't. He discusses the side effects of the various
SSRI and antidepressant drugs both short and the
potential long-term problems with continued usage. Dr.
Glenmullen advises of the severe side effects, including
uncontrollable facial and body tics that could be severe
and permanent brain damage and tics. About 50 percent of
patients suffer often-debilitating withdrawal symptoms
and about 60 percent end up with sexual dysfunction with
the SSRI drugs. Prozac and the other SSRI drugs may
render some people homicidal or suicidal, or both.
But
there are alternatives. St. John's Wort outsells Prozac
outsells 25 to 1 in Germany. Other considerations
include diet, 12 step programs, psychotherapy (talk
therapy). Dr. Glenmullen shows even with severe
depression requiring medications when used with other
therapies, he was able to discontinue the drugs within a
year.
Dr.
Glenmullen reviews many scientific studies, and
discusses numerous case studies from his practice.
Medical professionals as well as lay people will find
this book very helpful and informative. The
pharmaceutical industry tried unsuccessfully to keep
this book off the market due to the nature and damaging
detail of this book. If you are on a SSRI or other
antidepressant, it is must reading!
